the very first piece I ever read aloud in public

red sky of destruction
Visit to where I once belonged
Dust thick without age
Gloom where once was light
Bone white death where once I had life
Last of my kind when once I was many
Radioactive fallout killed once already
The need for money lost on me now
Mushroom cloud took that with my life
Man grew up in a flash
Now he is dead!!
Things can come and go very quickly.

Maybe it’s better to die like this than being smothered to death by pandemic

Back in the 50’s, during the cold war, many of us feared that the Russians would drop an atomic bomb first. As a kid this led to nightmares; first the flash, then the thunder, all life soon down under.

The mutilated tree in the foreground says it all. Humans will leave a smudge on this planet for a long time after we are gone.

Apt to the present moment. What is important? We often only discover it too late.
