this piece does not quite fit the prompt for tonight’s #dversepoetrypub but as a piece I wrote for a face to face group. the group called The Tikis writers guild does cover some important subjects. I believe that this needs an airing.
Humbug Sunset!
#dversepoetrypub, #conversations, #depression
“Look @ that colour!”
“uh”
“Yeah, that red/orange is stunning!”
“uh”
“Mind, if a sit here?”
“If you have too!”
“That sunset is jus……”
“And”
“Whoa I just wanna sit here and watch the sunset?”
“Why?”
“The view and that light.”
“Go on then. But leave me in peace!”
“Humbug?” offering a bag of mints
“What do you mean humbug?”
“Would you like a mint?”
“Na, she always smelt like them!”
“She still does! My sister.”
“WHAT THE FUCK!”
“Oops sorry!”
“WHAT?”
“Sorry just thinking out loud.”
“She jumped from here!”
“what? Who?”
Sobbing through tears “my one love.”
“Sorry man!”
“Yesterday, after, after, after …..”
“Come here man” offering a hug.
“The car crash!”
“But you survived.”
“But, but, but it’s only me left! I have no family left!”
“We are still with you dad!”
“HUH!”
“Me, mum and sis!”
“HUH”
“In here!” touching his heart “in here.”
“But you cannot be!”
“I have all ways been here with you since. My still birth.”
“Don’t jump Dad you have a job to do.”
“W-W-W-What Job?”
“Support of other like you!”
“Like me?
“Those who have lost fam. Family to drunk drivers.”
“How son, how?”
“One foot in front of the other. Till you are there.”
“where’s there?”
“The other side of this bridge. Remember Dad, we love you!”
The smell of mint humbug lingers forever around the park bench.

So good, Rog. I love the narrative tension in the dialogue, the pain and surprise, the hope, the “smell of mint humbug” that makes the parting and future union so real and present.
