Tonight at dverse poets pb Ingrid has invited to write an oral poem in the traditional manner of where poetry comes from. As a man of working class without a university education i rarely stick to the rules of modern written poetry. I do enjoy sharing my poetry at open mics nights which tend to be in poudy pubs full of loud musians and drunks singing along. a few weeks ago on one of my first times sharing after the pubs reopened i was heckled for the first time ever. my response came out on the spot. It is the only the i have done so. i have remembered it and only todat written it down it remans the only poem of mine i can recite from memory. sorry i can not put up a recording as i am on the free wordpress site and it doesn’t not support videos and audio clips.

Heckler put down!
There was a fat t***
Who lived in bigotry?
Who always voted tory?
He cackled once too often.
that night when he did heckle.
Now he is wearing buckles up his back
After getting this poets’ heckles up.

Rog, so sorry you got heckled! One of my greatest fears of reading poetry in front of a crowd. I do love your comeback on the heckler, especially, “Now he is wearing buckles up his back” I remember reading about Chuck Palahniuk and his writing group going into pubs to read their stories out loud as a sort of trial by fire.

Brilliant comeback to the heckler Rog! This reminds me of freestyle – how brave you were to stand up and read your poetry in a rowdy pub. Thanks for joining in 🙂

P.S. sorry, I didn’t realise that about the audio/video restrictions! If you have soundcloud or YouTube you could always make a recording and link to that.

Good for you, Rog! I would have shushed them for you! It’s always worth reading the poem regardless. I enjoyed your wordplay 🙂

I’m so sorry you went through that, but I love your response to him. Fuck people like that, open mic is hard enough, why be a parasite to the poet like this? I hope other people stared him down until he was ashamed.

He left embarrassed after I put him down which met with A cheer. Thank you

A great come back to the heckler! I don’t think I’d be brave enough to read at an open mike–especially now thinking of hecklers!

You are very brave. I could never bring myself to do a reading in public. I also have the same issue with WordPress; no audio allowed on the free version.

This is so clever and quite a humorous retort / action to anyone daring to heckle!!
