Envious Eyes
LOOKING BACK (a pallinode)

LOOKING BACK at how I was
Mixed up and confuddled
About my father’s alcoholism
I almost followed suit
While watching with envious eyes
Of others money and success
Now I know that my
Pockets contain words of poetry
I no longer look through wardrobe doors
with envy at the greedy

Striking, and an interesting dynamic with the change in perspective and intent. Cleverly done, with delicious notes of pain.

I so admire the twist in the story. What could have been due to envy but I gather that you saved yourself. I love this reveal:
my pockets contain words of poetry

I like both poems, Rog, but especially your recantation. Sounds as though you have arrived at a conclusion which will lead to a much happier, more satisfying life!

Rog,
The palinode just sings with pockets full of the poetry of words! Love the wardrobe image in both poems — that closeted desire, envy, greed that traps in self-defeating habits — and in the palinode becomes merely the vestige or the grave of the past.

What a compelling palinode. The lines ‘my Pockets contain words of poetry’ is a wonderful image.

It is easy to fall into the rut of old habits, and the temptation of the bottle is always there.
